Safe!

Earlier this evening, I went out with a friend to see Les Miserables again. I still love it! Afterwards, we went to Chili’s for dinner. Towards the end of the meal, I was starting to not feel well, so when I got home, I decided to take a nap before Midnight Mass.

I set my alarm, but when it went off, I still wasn’t feeling better, so I kept hitting snooze.

Finally, I decided to get up and go. Because I really do love going to Midnight Mass to start off the new year. And because I was concerned that if I let myself just sleep, I might miss the 10 am Mass tomorrow morning. 🙂

Week 1: The New Year

I really need about 20 minutes to make it to Ss. Cyril and Methodius on time, but left about a quarter to midnight. Traffic and lights were cooperative and I made it to a seat in the church just as the last bells of midnight were ringing and they were announcing the hymn for the processional. 🙂 SAFE! I thought. Sliding in to home plate, just before the priest greets us all with a loud “Happy New Year!”

Christmas Season Header

Why do a whole blog post about a header? Well, why not! 🙂

Christmas 2012

I — surprisingly — did not take a ton of pictures this Christmas Eve/Christmas Day. I did get to enjoy time with friends and family, at a more relaxed pace than usual.

From left to right:

Me on Christmas Eve.

My friend John, newly returned on break from a missionary adventure in Minnesota.

Katie and Lori, super kind and incredibly talented friends from high school.

Decorations from Katie’s Holiday Get-Together. (See what I mean about talented?)

Kenzie, my cousin’s daughter, who is about the cutest thing ever.

So, while New Year’s is right around the corner, Christmas season still goes on for a few more days. So snuggle up with your loved ones and enjoy them!

Fun at the Zoo Boo!

Sorry, everyone…. I’ve been quite sick lately, so EVERYTHING has fallen off my plate. Pretty sure I dropped the plate, too. I’ll try and catch up, if I ever get better. 🙂

Krystin invited me to the Zoo Boo with her family. It was so cute to see Evie as a bee, especially when she would tell us that a bee says, “Buzz!” Dad Jerad was quite the trooper, carrying his little girl most of the way. It’s always awesome to be around parents as excited and involved as Krystin and Jerad. 🙂

It was raining on the way over, but by the time we parked, the rain had stopped and we could see some blue sky peeking in:

The Detroit Zoo had set up a short walking course dotted with candy stations manned by Zoo personnel in various Halloween costumes. Along the way, we got to look at tons of carved pumpkins and other visual delights.

Independence Day Fireworks!

This post is going to be rather picture-heavy. 🙂

Yesterday was quite warm, so I spent most of the day inside in the air conditioning. My 4th of July tradition is to go up to Clawson to watch their fireworks display. For a small city, they put on quite the show!

Since I live only about a mile away, Lindsay and Erwin met up with me at my house and we walked up to the park (expecting a gridlock of traffic post-fireworks and wanting to avoid that). We met up with Brian, whose grandparents have a house in Clawson. By this time, it had started to rain. When we made it to the schoolyard across from the park field where the fireworks were to be fired from, we were soaked.

Luckily, the rain stopped in time for us to lay down our sheets and blankets and get ready for the show! The ground had been so dry that it soaked up all the rain and wasn’t soggy, although we remained damp for the rest of the night. We did get to enjoy some ice cream, while we waited for it to get fully dark. 🙂

Here is a small sample of what we got to see. The full set of pictures can be found here.

We decided to have dinner at Friday’s to conclude our evening. Food, fireworks and friends: who could ask for a better Independence Day? 🙂

A Great Mother’s Day!

Although my little peanut is in Heaven, I still had a pretty good Mother’s Day! 🙂

Before I go into my day, why don’t I post a nice, old-school photo of my mom with her two little monkeys:

We’re so cute, aren’t we? 🙂 Okay, we now return to our regularly scheduled blog posting…

I started the morning dancing to a new song I downloaded to my phone. 🙂 So much so, that I missed the 10:15 am Mass and had to attend the 12:15 pm Mass. No matter, it actually worked in my favor because I hadn’t uploaded my photos for printing yet. See, my present for all of my moms this year is prints of some of my favorite flower pictures. I usually get them *live* flowers, but the competition this year was pretty steep. I mean, at the Riccardo household alone, one of my brothers had already sent flowers, days ago, so he got the award for being first. Two of my sisters got flowers also, so I would not be original in my present. But then I thought of it. A photo of flowers! That way, they’d never die! That means I win, right? 😉

I spent time selecting photos for each of my moms: Mom Riccardo, Mom Duffy and Mom. I sent them off to the printer and headed to Mass.

After Mass, I had to stop to put gas into my car. Just as I was finishing, I heard, “Excuse me, miss?” I turned to see a guy in his early 20s from the car at the pump behind me. He asked if I would buy him a gallon of gas, as his card had declined. A girl about the same age was in the driver’s seat. Typically, I put money onto gas cards (to get the extra points), and had been using that for this fill-up. It had about $15 on it, so I gave it to the guy. 🙂 I love it when I get a chance to do something nice for someone. 🙂

I then went to Somerset, picked up the prints, got a yummy Starbucks, and bought a dark chocolate-covered strawberry for Mom and Mom R, as well as a chocolate raspberry cup and espresso truffle for myself from Godiva.

Armed with all my goodies, I stopped first at Mom Riccardo’s house. I had made some extra prints for Mom, including 2 of me so that she could put them on the fridge! 🙂 Heeheehee… She had just laid down for a nap (Yay!), so I dropped off the presents with Dad and tiptoed out of the house.

On the way to Mom’s house, I passed by the Dairy Treat. I know that years ago they had a Mounds flurry that she liked, and it was one of the only places that had this. So I stopped in and checked. Sure enough, they still had it! I grabbed a small one for her and a small Turtle flurry for me. 🙂

At Mom and Dad’s, Clint wasn’t feeling very well and spent the evening on the couch. We watched the Food Network (some things looked good, others made me nauseated) and had Chicken Shack for dinner.

I’m back home again with a few hours left in the day to prepare for the work week ahead of me and relax. What a beautiful day it was!

Happy Mother’s Day!

(Oh, and here are a few of the pictures that I printed for my moms!)

How to Make an Easter Basket for Priests

Making an Easter basket for priests is a very involved process…. One to be undertaken only after serious prayer and reflection, with love, charity and God’s grace! 🙂

1. Start with a boy-colored basket.
DSCN7089

2. Add boy-colored, non-sparkly Easter basket grass.
DSCN7091

3. Add golf balls (or other sports-related items).
DSCN7093

4. Add carrot shaped plastic Easter eggs, which will contain verses of Scripture and prayers.
DSCN7094

5. CANDY! (In this case, Mary Janes becausewe are going retro)
DSCN7095

6. More CANDY! (Again, retro lemon drops because I know they will get a boatload of chocolate)
DSCN7097

7. Make sure everyone gets an identical serving. We don’t want any fighting, after all! 😉

Worse Than the Hippo…

Okay, sometimes I stumble across things which are just not right, but which are exceedingly funny. In the spirit of the Halloween holiday, I will share:

A while back, one of my priests asked me to pray for a shepherd’s heart for him, because he said that he sometimes felt like the wolf wanting to devour the flock.

Later, we edited this to a hippo because I have a fear of dogs. (Even though hippos are like *the* most vicious mammal ever…)

Well, someone, inspired by Jurassic Park no doubt, came up with one even worse.

The Velocipastor!

Happy Halloween!

Halloween 2010

I love Halloween! It’s so much fun to dress up…and then, there’s the candy! 🙂

I actually managed to buy pumpkins early this year (instead of stealing from children and knocking over little old ladies on Devil’s Night to get some pumpkins).

I let my brother, who is my personal pumpkin carver (and who is WAY AWESOME at this), have free reign over this year’s theme. I ended up getting Freddy and Jason! Sweet! Look at them, aren’t they great?!

Lindsay and I celebrated the evening by meeting up with Erwin at a bar which was having a costume contest. I left before the judging, but Lindsay won 2nd place! 🙂

Here’s Lindsay in her SuperGirl costume (This outfit is rated PG-13):

And this is one tough chick! Look! She’s not even afraid when confronted by PacMan…and he’s notorious for how much he eats! 🙂

Everyone knows that superheroes congregate at bars, so when Captain America arrived, we knew it was time for a photo op! 🙂 This is the two of them looking fierce:

And at the end of the night, Bo Peep went home to count her sheep — to make sure she hadn’t lost any….

Which Mass is Your Favorite?

…  Because, of course, we have to rank these things, right?

I think my ranking will have to be:
1. Easter Vigil
2. Easter/Christmas
3. Chrism Mass
4. Palm Sunday
5. Priest Ordination (I haven’t been to one yet, but I’m pretty sure it’s going to rank high)
6. Midnight Mass for Mary, Jan. 1st
7. Lord’s Supper Mass/Tre Ore

Why does the question of ranking come up? Well, I was just reflecting on how excited I was that Chrism Mass is ALMOST HERE!!! 🙂

I’m sure Priest Ordination is going to be awesome! I mean, just think of the squee of New Priest! Awww!!! So precious. There’s something about that indelible mark on their soul and being conformed ontologically to Christ. *grin*

Why is Chrism Mass so special for me? There’s quite a few reasons, actually.
1. That smell! Yum! There’s something special about Holy Chrism that just smells like…home. 🙂 *bliss*
2. ALL THE PRIESTS RENEWING THEIR VOWS!!!! 🙂 *major squee!*
— That’s hundreds of reasons right there!

So….
Holy Week.
In just a few days!

I’ll get Palm Sunday, (Seder dinner), Chrism Mass, Lord’s Supper Mass, Pub Crawl of the Altars of Repose, Midnight Benediction, Tre Ore, Tenebrae, Easter Vigil Mass and Easter Mass.

Could there ever, ever be a better week??

I don’t think so.

At least, until the Lord comes again. 🙂

God Bless you all and have an amazing, solemn and joyful Holy Week!!!

Pre-Lenten Questions

Believe it or not, but Lent is just around the corner!
And I don’t even have my Christmas tree down yet!

Lent is this great period of time where we rid our lives of all the unnecessary attachments that we clutter our lives with and focus more closely on our relationship with the Lord. It should be a time of simplification and purification. It should be a time of prayer, almsgiving and fasting. It should be a time of generosity, love and charity. It should be a time of sober self-reflection.

It should be a lot of things.

What will it be?

That’s up to me.

What am I going to put into it?

God gives us grace all the time. The thing is we have to respond to that grace which is offered. It is too easy to put something off for tomorrow or rationalize our way into spiritual laxity. We can justify all kinds of neglects and omissions, particularly when it comes to our own spiritual lives, because we don’t see that as being harmful to anyone. Then, we arrive at Easter, look back at our Lent and perhaps wish that we had spent more time in prayer, or done a few more acts of charity.

What is the main reason for a mediocre Lent? Poor planning. We need to set our goals in mind NOW and work NOW to make sure that we have a rhythm to our season. Praying is most consistent if you set aside a certain time and place — every day — when and where you pray. Lent needs to be for us not some onerous thing which we take upon ourselves for 40 days. Lent shouldn’t be seen as a kind of self-imposed slavery, but as a practicing in the life which we hope to have one day in Christ. A life where we are prayerful and loving of our brothers and sisters. A life where we truly live out the Gospel. God didn’t make us for slavery, and doing things which are pleasing to Him shouldn’t be seen as such. It’s just our sinful selves which distort the truth of reality and make us to see our unhealthy attachments as the path to happiness, when they are in fact leading us in the opposite direction.

So, my challenge to myself, and to you, if you choose to join me, is to map out our plan for Lent, so that we can reap all the graces our Lord is offering to us.
