Add a Little Hop to Your Morning… I Did

I walked out into the kitchen this morning and gave a curious look to something on the floor which shouldn’t be, not recognizing what it was. When I took a step closer and it moved suddenly… AAAAAH! I went running the other way! 🙂 It was a HUGE FROG!

How did he get in my house?

When I went back towards him to try and encourage him to hop out the back door, he saw me coming, SQUEAKED! (Awww…) and hopped away from me in fear. Poor guy. Who knows how long he’s been trapped in the house? I wonder if he’s the one I deliberately avoided killing a couple weeks in a row as I mowed the lawn? If so, he’s gotten pretty big, fast!

I got him outside, then found a little plastic dish, and put it out there, just in case he needed a drink. 🙂

Mid-Week Day Off!

Since I have to work on Saturday this week, I took today off. It always feels odd, to have a day off work like this in the middle of the week, but I like it! 🙂

(Of course, this means that my plans for Saturday… will have to be canceled. I forgot about that part….)

I took the opportunity to plan a day with my friend, Amy, whom I met on Facebook. We had met briefly in person at the first HHS rally, but this was to be our first chance to actually get together. I make friends with people so quickly, I had to keep reminding myself that I was still pretty much a stranger. LOL! 🙂 It was such a lovely afternoon! And passed by all too quickly!

Can you believe that I spent an entire day off and didn’t take a single picture?! I even brought both cameras with me!

And, I never did find out what jobs she had waiting for me…. 🙂 Perhaps next time….

I wake up throughout the night, usually. Since today was a day off, I got to sleep in until about 7 am. I had originally intended to go to the 9:30 am Mass here in Troy, but knew that I had some things to do before I left the house and that it probably wouldn’t be practical for me to get them done and fit Mass in also. Plus, I wanted to make sure that I felt well enough to visit this afternoon. So, I ended up laying around in bed reading a book until 9 am or so. It was a really good book, which added to my lounging. 🙂

Finally, I dragged myself out of bed and went to tackle the laundry situation. See, I only have one pair of shorts. And I had worn them to the picnic last week where there was the possibility of them (and me) having come in contact with some poison ivy.

I hate poison ivy with a vile, vile passion.

So, they had remained in a little heap by the laundry room, waiting for me to “decontaminate” them. Which I had put off. Until today.

But I couldn’t just do this pile of clothes. That would be too easy. I had let laundry pile up. I hadn’t laundered those clothes because I had a load of towels in the washer, needing to be dried. And I hadn’t put the wet towels in the dryer because there was a dry load in there waiting to be removed, folded and put away. And I hadn’t done *that* because every time I thought of it, I was exhausted and couldn’t possibly bring myself to take them out of the dryer, carry them to the bedroom and put them away.

Because taking clothes out of the dryer and carrying them to my bedroom makes me short of breath. And I’d have to make at least two trips to get all of the clothes out.

This disease really makes my life complicated sometimes.

So in order to get ready for this afternoon, I had to empty the dryer, run the load of towels again (since they were starting to get that mildew smell and had to be washed again with some detergent and vinegar — remind me to sing the praises of vinegar for you one day…), toss *those* into the dryer, run the load of picnic clothes, dry *them* and then get dressed.

I don’t have the world’s fastest dryer. I asked for “cheapest” when I went to buy it. It has three dry cycles. I use two of them. “Automatic high” for everything, and “Timer” for warming up clothes in the winter or getting the wrinkles out of dirty laundry that I’m going to wear again (yep, I’m a bachelor). It has three cycles because apparently they don’t make a dryer that only has one. Truly, I only need “on” and “off”. The salesman looked at me oddly when I asked if there were such a thing.

Needless to say, I was running late. 🙂 I stopped at a Biggby coffee to get drinks for Amy, me and the kids. For the kids, I ordered 100 oz. of frozen hot chocolate. 🙂 For Amy and I, I picked up some iced drinks and for once ordered them *with ice* like a normal person. However, I managed to slop part of one of the iced drinks on me when trying to get into the car. Luckily, I had a towel inside and could wipe off. And, thankfully, I had a dark shirt on, so could arrive without a glaringly obvious coffee stain. 🙂

It was a lovely visit, and not only did I get to spend time with Amy and her family, but I also got to meet her friend, Lydia! 🙂 And, I had some of Amy’s pot pie for dinner! Yum!

Too soon, it was time to head home. I listed to another episode of Catholic Answers Live (which I had heard previously) on the way back, because I am *certain*, or at least 87% certain, that I heard one of the guests say on the program that Pope John Paul II wrote something where he made a distinction between human life and human personhood. I had asked Fr. John what this writing might be, as I wanted to read it, and he said that this didn’t sound right — that JPII wouldn’t have said something like that. So here I am, listening to all the episodes from the past week, trying to find it….

I got home and was surprised at how tired I am. Just hanging out here on the couch, playing online a bit. Today’s a fasting day, but I can’t fast from food, so I decided today to fast from TV, since I’d been creating a habit of vegging out and watching DVR’ed episodes of House Hunters until late in the evenings. Amazing how that can get to be a routine, even though I’d gone without watching any TV for about 8 months or so until recently.

For the rest of the night, I think I’ll be online for a little bit, read for a little bit and spend some real quality time in prayer. 🙂

Have a good night!

Fruit and Veggie Presents!

I love getting deliveries to my house. I always feel like I’m getting presents, even when I’m the one paying for them! Add this to the fact that I hate to go grocery shopping, and you can see why I’m so excited about getting fresh fruits and veggies delivered to my door by Door to Door Organics! I currently have only selected to get their Bitty [smallest] box once every two weeks to try it out and see how quickly I eat it up.

Today, I got my first shipment!

First, you know it’s going to be quality stuff when they send it bearing works of art [Crayola drawings on the shipping label]. How cute is that! 🙂

When you first open the box, they have a little envelope, welcoming you. Inside: a magnet for my fridge!

They must know that I like to put stuff on my fridge:

Here’s the first real peek inside the box:

You can kinda see it under all my food, but they also sent a picture for me to color! 🙂 Super fun!

Now, all I have to do is come up with ways to prepare these goodies! More photos to come! 🙂

Nothing Like a Brand-New Baby!

DSCN2319

At work, the MiChart Cadence Credentialed Trainers are like another family to me. 🙂 So we celebrated, with great joy, the birth of our first MiChart baby!

Nick brought his wife, Betsy, and their new daughter, Madelin, in for us to meet her.

She is such a doll! I mean, just look at her!
DSCN2321

We filled a huge gift bag with lots of presents for Madelin and her new parents, and ordered pizza and soda so that we would have more time during our lunch hour[s] to visit. I got to hold her for a very long time! 🙂 She slept through it all; only occasionally pausing to stretch or sigh or squeak a little. 🙂

Congratulations to Nick and Betsy! Your life will never be the same again!

Rollerskating with St. Anastasia

For our end-of-the-year Religious Education celebration, we rented out Skate World! I had wanted to go skating for quite a while and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to go.

It was a lot of fun to be skating with the kids and other members of the parish.

Both Fr. Eric and Fr. JJ showed up (and showed us up!) at the rink.

Fr. JJ out on the skating floor!DSCN2170

Fr. JJ claimed to not have been skating in quite a while, yet he was more than comfortable out there. Fr. Eric zoomed around the rink with ease, forwards and backwards, weaving in and out of little children. Towards the end of the night, I tried for my former practice of picking the fastest hot shot out there and passing him, but was unsuccessful — because I feared taking one of the kids out. 🙂 As far as the kids go, both Fr. Eric and Fr. JJ helped the kids with their skating throughout the night. Or was it the kids holding them up??? 😉

Fr. Eric and Fr. JJ each have a flock of kids to hold them up!

As for me, the first few laps were extremely painful and I had horrible foot cramps. But, thank God, these subsided and I was able to skate the rest of the evening (we were there for 2 hours) with only (mainly quadricep) muscle fatigue to deal with. Close to the end, Fr. JJ got this great idea for us to (in skates) pose for a picture while standing on one foot.

Fr. JJ and I, on skates, on one foot...

Do not worry! Neither one of us fell! At least at this time. Earlier, I was skating with Mya and she had crossed in front of me. I didn’t have time to correct her and we both went down. I was able to catch her as we fell, so she didn’t hit the floor. I had a hard time getting back to my feet again and fell a second time, before Dave helped me up. 🙂 I was pleasantly surprised that neither fall really hurt. So much for my falling fear, eh? 🙂

On a Friday Afternoon…

It was a nice, sunny, warm Friday after work, and I decided that I didn’t feel like getting stuck in stop-and-go traffic on the way home, so I tarried at Our Lady of Good Counsel for a bit.

My boss had given me her old pair of Rollerblades, and I’ve been keeping them in my trunk — you never know when you are going to have the opportunity to use them.

I parked the car in an unoccupied corner of the parking lot which looked relatively flat and popped open the trunk. I donned my new-to-me ‘blades and started skating around. I could only do 2-3 largish figure 8s around the car before I had to sit on the bumper and rest a bit, but it was a lot of fun!

As you can see, I haven’t yet gotten around to matching my socks and just grabbed the two which came closest to hand this morning:

At least this is the current fashion for the school kids and I can just pretend that I did it intentionally to be trendy. 🙂

After skating as long as I could, I still wasn’t quite ready to leave and walked around with my camera taking pictures of various things.

There were these cute little blue flowers.
DSCN2039
I saw pictures of them on Google saying that these are bluebells, but I’m not sure… They’re very cute, whatever they are.

There were also these little berry things. I didn’t try to eat them. 🙂

And a small flowering tree in the “wooded area” between the parking lot and the Garden of Gethsemane.

Peter was still sleeping, so I didn’t try to wake him.

Instead, I looked around and found a cool little stripey rock:
DSCN2054

I walked over by our Lord, and someone had placed roses by Him. Unfortunately, this put thorns right by His face.
DSCN2056
I wasn’t too crazy about that. 😦

I prayed and lit a candle for my intentions:
DSCN2060

I admired the oddly peeling bark of one of the trees:
DSCN2062

I then visited the other side, where we have the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto. There was a bunch of new candles anxiously awaiting prayers:

Our Lady had flowering trees, too:

The Living Stones of OLGC:
DSCN2073
I’m sure that I wouldn’t be able to pick out which one was my stone if it was held up in front of me. But… didn’t I take a photo of it before I put it in the pile? Hmm…

There’s a little nook by the front entrance with a bench. It’s a little odd, seeing as there are floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides of you, so everyone inside the church can see you sitting out there, but no one was around on a Friday afternoon, so I sat for a little while. See? I even saved you a seat! 🙂
DSCN2087

While I was sitting there, I got to look at this statue. I think this is supposed to be Baby Jesus.
DSCN2088

As you can see, I’m quite talented at amusing myself. 🙂 As soon as some joggers started down the driveway, I decided that I had stalled for long enough and headed home. It was a pleasant diversion from the daily drive. 🙂 I love Church!

Oh the Things You Find…

I was in my garage looking for my A&P textbook this morning.  I didn’t find it, but I *did* find “Principles of Gene Manipulation.”  I took it inside the house and was flipping through it when I found a scrap of paper that I had apparently used as a bookmark.

Jonathan Zezulka

Someone’s address on the USS Hancock.  I have no idea how, where or when I met Jonathan.  Now, I’m curious…  So I pop onto Facebook and search for his name.  No luck.  I search Google — I know, it’s a long shot, but his last name doesn’t seem common so there’s a chance.

Well, I *did* find something.  Apparently, he was married and his wife died while he was stationed in Iraq.  😦  How horrible!  I can’t imagine that pain.

He has a profile up on one of the Veterans sites, stating that not only was he on the Hancock, but he was an Electrician’s Mate from NNPTC Orlando.  So, he was a Nuke, like me.  Did I know him in Nuke school?  Did I meet him in Jacksonville?  In Norfolk?  Puerto Rico?  Hawaii?

I’m still curious.  I’d like to run into him again and catch up on things.  🙂  Fr. JJ always says there’s no such thing as a coincidence….  I wonder what this means….  🙂

The Rollercoaster of Life

Erwin and Rob on Dragster - DSCN9394

What a rollercoaster life is, eh?  From the bumps, highs, lows, scary parts, exciting parts, times where you are waiting and waiting just to get in the car, disappointments, aggravations, thrill, dread and anticipation, that feeling — once you’ve committed yourself and are strapped in, climbing the big hill, listening to the loud clanking of the chain pulling you away from the safe and familiar — wondering, “What was I thinking?  Will I survive this?”  And the joy and sense of being alive, spurring you on to the next experience.

It’s nowhere near as much fun going on the ride alone — you need to experience it with your friends.  The problem is, when you are on the ride, everything is a blur.  It’s not until you get off that you have time to compare notes about what you just experienced.

Life is kind of like that, too.  I am so grateful for my friends who are accompanying me on this ride.  At the same time, we are busy, busy, busy and there’s never enough time to spare with any of them.  We just catch glances, as it were.

Heaven, then, will be the time where — after the ride — we can spend time together, talking about the experience and how grateful we are that our friends were on the ride with us.

Morning Jubilation!

Kermit

So this morning, while very early is off to a good start! I finished watching one of my favorite movies, “Captain America,” before heading in to work. On the way, I stopped and got a berry white mocha at Caribou, and was happily sipping on this while singing along to “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing!” and “Come All Ye Faithful.” Hopefully, I will still have a voice when I have to teach, which is in less than 30 minutes!

I was also wearing a Kermit hat not too dissimilar to this one! I even wore it around the building for a while and considered wearing it throughout today’s training sessions. Alas, professionalism won out, but the thought was fun while it lasted. 🙂

Living Life … in Plymouth!

Today, we had a small class that didn’t ask many questions, so we finished rather early.  I popped in some of my fellow trainers’ classes to see if they needed help, but they were doing great and close to finishing.  I hadn’t had lunch yet and figured that I would head somewhere where I could hang out a bit and update some of my lesson plans to finish out the day.

I drove over to Plymouth, and was intending to go to the Box Bar, but because everyone had this week between Christmas and New Year’s off … Plymouth was overrun with people!  🙂  How fun to be out with all these people!  Much better than staying in an empty training classroom in a nearly empty building with no recourse to coffee!  After finding parking, I was right by this restaurant I’ve been longing to try.  It’s called Simple Sandwich, and as they are only open 11 am to 5 pm, I hadn’t caught them when they were open before.

I grabbed a big table and spread all my work stuff out.  As I updated my lesson plans, I got to watch the snow fall and people walk around downtown.  And eat this great turkey sandwich!  After finishing updating Front Desk 1, I decided to move my location (even though there were plenty of free tables) to the Plymouth Library.

I inquired about library privileges, but it turns out they are not reciprocal with Troy Public Library.  Not only that, but one cannot purchase a membership, and even though I’m in Plymouth nearly every day, my work address is not in Plymouth, so I can’t get a business membership.  Rats.  But, they did issue me a temporary library card and said that when it expired, they could give me a new one.  I thought at first that it was just so I could use the computers while I was there, but no!  I have lending privileges as well!  Score!

Let me tell you … Plymouth Library is NICE!  🙂  Colorful, cozy and lots of books!  What more could you ask for?  They even had a fairly big section on Genealogy, which was good, since my dad gave me the project of researching our family tree.  As it turns out, both my mother and my father’s ancestry goes back to 1630s New England, so many of the books on the shelves were relevant for me.  I used my cell phone camera as a pocket Xerox and took about 135 photo of relevant pages.  That should keep me busy for a while!

With both parents having history as founding settlers and the Native American aspect, I suppose I’m as American as it gets, right?!  🙂

By the time I got home, I was too tired for dinner and went straight to bed.  Which is why I got up at 1:30 am and am here at 3 am writing a blog post.  LOL!  It’s going to be a long day!  Dear Starbucks, expect my business!  🙂
